CMR findings in high endurance veteran athletes - a 247 subject study

چکیده
Background Athletes demonstrate major adaptative changes in their hearts with high level of exercise. However the long term consequences of endurance training were not completely understood. We aimed to to explore the effect of long term endurance exercise on cardiac morphology and function, and diffuse fibrosis, and assess the significance of any discovered changes (correlation with documented ventricular arrhythmias).

Diverse patterns of myocardial fibrosis in lifelong, veteran endurance athletes.
This study examined the cardiac structure and function of a unique cohort of documented lifelong, competitive endurance veteran athletes (>50 yr). Twelve lifelong veteran male endurance athletes [mean ± SD (range) age: 56 ± 6 yr (50-67)], 20 age-matched veteran controls [60 ± 5 yr; (52-69)], and 17 younger male endurance athletes [31 ± 5 yr (26-40)] without significant comorbidities underwent c...
متن کاملPrevalence of Knee OA in Karate Community in Indonesia
Background. Osteoarthritis (OA) ranks fifth in the most disabling conditions. Karate is an unarmed combat sport that uses hands and feet to deliver and block blows. The karate movements, such as high load and frequent flexion and extension of the knee, make the athletes susceptible to knee injuries and progress to knee OA (KOA). Objectives. The study aims to address the prevalence and risk fac...
متن کاملGlobal diastolic function in endurance athletes: three-dimensional volume tracking of the mitral annulus with cine-CMR
Background CMR can be used to assess the structure and function of athletes’ hearts. However, diastolic function is not routinely measured with CMR. Mitral annular (MA) motion, commonly assessed by tissue Doppler imaging, is an important element of diastole that may help to distinguish physiological remodeling from pathological processes of the heart. CMR has been shown to play a useful role in...
متن کاملElectrocardiographic findings in male veteran endurance athletes.
Twenty male veteran endurance runners and 20 controls underwent resting, exercise, and ambulatory electrocardiography. Four athletes and three controls satisfied voltage criteria for left ventricular hypertrophy. The PR interval was longer in the athletes and they had longer mean (SD) treadmill exercise times (19 (4) v 16 (2) min) than the controls. Four athletes but no controls had greater tha...
متن کاملمقایسهی سطوح نیازهای انگیزشی ورزشکاران جانباز و غیرجانباز (معلول) بر پایه نظریه ERG
This study was undertaken as an attempt to compare the motivational needs of two groups of disabled athletes, i.e. war veterans and ordinary ones (non-veterans). The article tries to dig up proper and plausible answers for the following queries: Do the level of existence needs of war veteran disables athletes and other disabled athletes differ from one another? Are there any differences in the ...
